For the women in the twentieth century today, who have more freedom than before and have not experienced the depressive life that Gilman lived from 1860 to 1935, it is difficult to understand Gilman's situation and understand the significance of "The Yellow Wallpaper". Gilman's original purpose of writing the story was to gain personal satisfaction if Dr. S. Weir Mitchell might change his treatment after reading the story. However, as Ann L. Jane suggests, "The Yellow Wallpaper" is "the best crafted of her fiction: a genuine literary piece...the most directly, obviously, self-consciously autobiographical of all her stories" (Introduction xvi). And more importantly, Gilman says in her article in The Forerunner, "It was not intended to drive people crazy, but to save people from being driven crazy, and it worked" (20). Therefore, "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a revelation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's own emotions. When the story first came out in 1892 the critics considered "The Yellow Wa llpaper" as a portrayal of female insanity rather than a story that reveals an aspect of society. In The Transcript, a physician from Boston wrote, "Such a story ought not to be written...it was enough to drive anyone mad to read it" (Gilman 19). This statement implies that any woman that would write something to show opposition to the dominant social values must have been insane. In Gilman's time setting "The ideal woman was not only assigned a social role that locked her into her home, but she was also expected to like it, to be cheerful and gay, smiling and good humored" (Lane, To Herland 109). Those women who rejected this role and pursued intellectual enlightenment and freedom would be scoffed, alienated, and even punished. This is exactly what Gilman experienced when she tried to express her desire for independence. Gilman expressed her emotional and psychological feelings of rejection from society for thinking freely in "The Yellow Wallpaper", which is a reaction to the fact that it was against the grain of society for women to pursue intellectual freedom or a career in the late 1800's. Her taking Dr. S. Weir Mitchell's "rest cure" was the result of the pressures of these prevalent social values. Charlotte Gilman was born on July 3, 1860, in Hartford, Connecticut in a family boasting a list of revolutionary thinkers, writers. And intermarriages among them were, as Carol Berkin put it, "in discrete confirmation of their pride in association" (18).

Grandparent Rights

My First Grandson How many of you have grandparents that have played an important role in your life? Were they there when you needed them? According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, there are over 29 thousand children in Idaho alone who are being raised by their grandparents. I am one of those grandparents. On November 21s, 2004 Destin Hardy was born and this is when the bond of grandparents and grandchild began. Destin was 12 months old when his parents decided to move to Washington. It was so hard for me to let him go. I knew however that anytime I wanted to see him I was able to.It was in 2006 when my grandson and my son came down for a visit, they ended up staying with us on a permanent basis. My son was 20 years old and was just getting back on his feet, so I suggested that Destin stay with us until my son had a stable environment for him to go to. I at this time didn’t know the big effect this would have on my life. Another kid was all I could think about. I wasn’t worried I wouldn’t be able to do it, as I have raised four children of my own. I was actually worried about how to do it. Raising a child in today’s world is more difficult than when I was raising my children.Being a grandma and being a mother are two different things. I wanted to spoil him rotten. And as we all know once spoiled, always spoiled. So life began with a spoiled baby. It didn’t take to long for me to change to the mother mode though. My parental instinct took over and all of the skills I had used before came back to me. Destin was so active at this age. He loved the water and playing ball. I think his favorite thing to do was to jump on the trampoline or was it riding the lawn mower with â€Å"my wavier† (Xavier), as he called him. Even at night time he would want to read or color.I placed him in preschool at the age of three and watched him grow with knowledge. I can remember that every day I dropped him off; he would take my hand and show me the parakeets and the big parrot. He had to make sure they knew he was there. While attending preschool, Destin began reading at a higher level than expected. He was five and graduated with a preschool graduation diploma with special recognitions â€Å"Outstanding Learner†. This was a proud day in grandma’s life. Guiding Destin and talking to him as if he was a mature child helped with his language skills and communication skills.He is a very intelligent young man and knows more than an average child should know at his age. At the age 6 1/2 Destin decided that he wanted to get involved with football like his uncles. I thought about this long and hard deciding that it wasn’t in his best interest. I then decided that Tai Kwon Do would be better for him. He could use a little more self-discipline and balance skills. What a great idea. Destin’s accomplishments have been great. In one year he graduated 4 belts and received his green belt one month ago.From the day that Destin was born, to watching him turn into a little man. Destin has brought a great joy to my life. I would never take back a minute of sharing his life with him. I wonder what the future holds for my grandson. I know that with the right guidance and love he will go on to accomplish great things and one day be a great leader and mentor to his children and grandchildren. Why Animal Rights Activist Are Against the AKC

The Purina Dog Food Company lists two major dog shows on their website: The Westminster Dog Show and The National Dog Show. In addition to these shows, The American Kennel Club, the AKC, also lists conformation events under their supervision. These shows are about finding a member of each pure breed who conforms to the AKC standard of what they consider the perfect specimen of a breed. Animal rights activists don’t discriminate against the animals they seek to protect.  Their clarion call has always been that they don’t only fight for the rights of the cute and fluffy, but any animal of any species because they believe all animals have a right to exist unimpaired and unencumbered by humans. So why then, would animal rights activists target the AKC? This organization appears to care deeply for the welfare of dogs. For one, the AKC issues â€Å"papers† on any purebred dog, which is a big problem for animal rights activists seeking to stop the sale of puppies from puppy mills. When the retailer shrieks about how their puppies are all â€Å"AKC Purebreds† it makes it difficult to convince consumers that any puppy, no matter where s/he was born, will get an AKC pedigree. That doesnt make the puppy any healthier or more desirable, especially if the puppy is purchased at a pet store. What is a Dog Show? Dog shows are organized around the world by various clubs. In the United States, the most prestigious dog shows are organized by the American Kennel Club. At an AKC dog show, dogs are judged by a set of criteria called  a standard  that is unique to each recognized breed. A dog can be disqualified completely for certain deviations from the standard. For example, the standard for an Afghan Hound includes a height requirement of â€Å"27 inches, plus or minus one inch; bitches, 25 inches, plus or minus one inch, and a weight requirement of â€Å"About 60 pounds; bitches, about 50 pounds. There are also precise requirements for their gait, coat, and the size and shape of the head, tail, and body. As for temperament, an Afghan Hound found with â€Å"sharpness or shyness† is faulted and loses points because they should be â€Å"aloof and dignified, yet gay.† The dog does not even have the liberty to choose his own personality. Some standards even require certain breeds to be mutilated in order to compete. Their tails must be docked and their ear carriage surgically reconstructed. Ribbons, trophies, and points are awarded to the dogs who most closely match the standard for their breed. As dogs  accumulate  points, they can attain champion status and qualify for higher level shows, culminating in the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Only purebred, intact (not spayed or neutered) dogs are allowed to compete. The purpose of these points and shows is to ensure that only the finest specimens of the breeds be allowed to procreate, thereby bettering the breed with each new generation.   The Breeding Problem The most obvious problem with dog shows is that they encourage breeding, both directly and indirectly. As explained on the American Kennel Clubs  website, Spayed or neutered dogs are not eligible to compete in conformation classes at a dog show, because the purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding stock. The shows create a culture based on breeding, showing and selling dogs, in the pursuit of a champion. With  three to four million  cats and dogs killed in shelters every year, the last thing we need is more breeding. The more reputable or responsible breeders will take back any dog the purchaser does not want, at any time during the dogs life, and some argue that they do not contribute to overpopulation because all of their dogs are wanted. To animal rights activists, a responsible breeder is a contradiction because anyone breeding is not responsible enough to help keep the population in check and is, in fact, responsible for the births and deaths of unwanted dogs. If  fewer people bred their dogs, there would be fewer dogs for sale and more people would adopt from shelters. Breeders also create a demand for the dogs and their breed through advertising and by simply by putting them on the market. Furthermore, not everyone who wants to surrender a purebred dog will return to the breeder. Approximately  25 percent of shelter dogs are purebred. The AKC website listing breed rescue groups  is not about adopting or rescuing a dog, but about information about the purebred rescue. Nothing on the page promotes adopting or rescuing dogs. Instead of encouraging adoption and rescue, their page on rescue groups tries to redirect the public to their breeder search page, breeder referral page, and online breeder classifieds. Every dog purchased from a breeder or pet store is a vote for more breeding and a death sentence for a dog in a shelter. While dog show participants care about the welfare of their dogs, they seem to care little about the millions of dogs who are not theirs. As one AKC judge stated, â€Å"If it’s not a purebred dog, it’s a mutt, and mutts are worthless.† Purebred Dogs Animal rights activists object to promoting purebred dogs, not only  because it encourages breeding and inbreeding, but also because it implies these dogs are more desirable than others. Without dog shows, there would be less of a demand for dogs who have a certain pedigree or conform to an artificial set of physical specifications that are considered ideal for each breed. As breeders strive to meet the standard for their breed, inbreeding is common and expected. Breeders know that if a certain desirable trait runs through a bloodline, breeding two blood relatives who have that trait will bring out that trait. However, inbreeding also amplifies other traits, including health problems. One study suggests that mutts are considered the healthiest of all. Purebreds, however,  are known to have  health issues, either due to inbreeding or due to the very standards of the breed. Brachycephalic breeds such as bulldogs cannot mate or give birth naturally because of breathing issues. Female bulldogs must be artificially inseminated and give birth via C-section. Flat-Coated Retrievers are prone to cancer, and half of all Cavalier King Charles Spaniels suffer from mitral valve disease. Because of their breed standards and the need to categorize dogs into different breeds and groups, dog shows give the impression that purebred dogs are more desirable than mixed-breed dogs. Even the word pure in purebred implies something disturbing, and some activists have equated breed standards with racism and  eugenics  in humans. Animal rights activists believe that every dog, no matter their breed or health issues, should be valued and cared for. No animal is worthless. All animals have worth. Answer: Significance of music in the play the Tempest Introduction The Tempest is one of the plays of William Shakespeare that has included a lot of singing and dancing in its narrative. There is at least one musical element in every act. The scope of the entire play is on a deserted island that is inhabited by just three people. In such a case, music adds a sense of solemnity for the audience that is there to witness the play. Also, the music has a strange pleasing effect on Caliban, who has been portrayed as rude and uneducated. Caliban is seen to be getting fascinated by the isle [which] is full of noises, / Sounds, and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not. Taking a closer look, we find that music gets a center stage in all the proceedings of the play. Music is used not as a background tool like it is usually done in most cases. We can clearly see that music, in fact, dictates whatever happens throughout the course of action of the play. The role of Music If we were to follow the neo-platonic idealization, we would know that music has the ability to be a tool of both a source of riot and disorder and an imitation of the divine. When we look at The Tempest, we can find that it has been used in both the ways very efficiently by Shakespeare(Lindley). Right at the beginning of the play, we find the storm being brought about by Prospero. As we progress, we find a lot of song and music being played by Ariel(Blackstone). All these pieces of music have played an important part throughout the play to give it a framework or something to support the entire course of action. Almost all of the pieces of music that Shakespeare uses in The Tempest contain a message in some or the other form. From what can be seen, the message is either one that is used to convey to the characters some piece of information or idea, or it is for providing some kind of idea to the audience. Ariels second song, which can be found in Act I scene II, lines 396-403, contains an idea of this nature. This is where we find an important message that is being conveyed through a song(Butler 120-122). Ariel does not for once convey directly to Ferdinand that his father has not survived the shipwreck. However, Ferdinand does not fail to understand the message and also reveals that it was something that he had already anticipated. The next big deciding factor in the plays narrative also comes when Ariel sings a song to prevent Alonso from getting murdered(Guo). In this scene, Ariel makes the entire company fall asleep except for Sebastian and Antonio. As they are awake and Ariel is invisible, he listens to the entire conspiracy plans being made by the two of them. It is here that we find Ariel once again make use of music to avert an impending disaster. Ariel softly sings into Gonzalos ears to wake him up. Gonzalo wakes up and finds Sebastian and Antonio with unsheathed swords. Ariel was invisible in the scene but music played a part in portraying him as being present on the stage. Also, music is an important factor that is being used by Shakespeare to give his narrative a direction. Joshua Cohen in his article, The music of The Tempest, says that this is an important factor, as it is not clear whether Ariel is Air, spirit, nature, song. However, Music is the only factor that provides the audience to understan d that Ariel does possess a physical existence as well. Joshua Cohen delves deeper into the background of Shakespeares usage of music in the play. He links it to the Greek tragedy where music was used as a tool for evoking emotions in the hearts of the audiences. He says that Shakespeare borrowed the tool from the Operas, which were taking shape during that period. One of the earliest Operas, Monteverdis Orfeo, was being premiered in 1607, which was just four years prior to the premiere of The Tempest. Joshua Cohen believes that it is quite possible that Shakespeare incorporated the musical element into his plays in accordance with the contemporary trend. The Opera, in turn, was a product that was inspired by the musical pieces in the Greek tragedies that were created by a section of Florentine poets and musicians known as the Camerata(Moseley). In such a case, the use of Shakespeare can be traced back to the Greek tragedies. Shakespeare took note of the contemporary trend, and used it in a manner similar to how it was originally used. Thus, from what we have seen, it is quite evident that Shakespeare does not treat music as an external element in this play(Howard 474-478). Although Shakespeare utilized music in a lot of other plays, this one is where he utilized it in an integrated manner. As Shakespeare had a dedicated team of musicians who would play music for his plays, he put them to full use in this play. While in the other plays, music did exist as an external factor, that was in the background and was utilized solely for providing a kind of concreteness to the action on the stage, The Tempest can be considered to be Shakespeares only play that integrates music as a part of the play itself. When we speak of The Tempest, we see that the music is shown to be taking place in the course of action. The songs, the music, are in fact part of the entire action. The songs are shown as being entwined with the air of the magical island. Finally, the most important pieces of music can be seen in the masque that is performed in the end and the song that Ariel performs in the end. The masque performed by Juno and Ceres is one of the most attractive pieces of music that can be seen throughout the play(Petrobelli). The song by Juno and Ceres contains a marriage for the newly engaged couple and as a result is a part of the narrative. While Shakespeare utilized the concept of a play within a play, he decided to take full advantage of the situation. He used this scene to convey a message to the audience and also to give an idea about the future direction. What is further notable in this scene is that the characters who perform the masque are not the kind of entities that Ariel is(Naylor). Although they are spirits much like Ariel, they are visible to the audience as well as the characters. Their extravagant show is, in fact, a technique to draw the attention to the importance of the scene and the message. In the end, we hear the last song by Ariel which gives us an idea of what the future holds for the characters. This is a brilliant touch by Shakespeare as he utilized music throughout the course of the play as its driving force. Conclusion While The Tempest is one of the most musical plays of Shakespeare, it is important to notice that it is also different.
